First, plan ahead. The well-prepared dog gets the best food—it’s as simple as that. Is the grill on a wood deck or a stone patio? (Your claws may work better on wood.) How close to protective cover is it? Once you have that burger in your mouth, will you have to run past several humans—or can you head directly into bushes? How far is the grill from the house? Can you get to the bushes before a human can get to you?
While planning is important, the successful grab and go requires patience, timing and luck. Patience: your nose may be screaming, “Grab that burger NOW!” But if you aren’t patient, if you make your move too soon, not only will you not achieve your goal, you may well get a smack on your butt. Timing: has the chef left his/her post? Is he or she out of sight? Is there a small human nearby to help you? Luck: Did they leave the cover open? Are you tall enough to grab and go? Remember, watch those paws on the grill.

Thought for the month: If you can run and chew burgers at the same time, you’ll have a good summer.
