COASTAL HUMANE SOCIETY AND DISABLED AMERICAN VETERANS TEAM UP TO ADOPT ANIMALS

(Brunswick) Brunswick Chapter 15 of the Disabled American Veterans and Coastal Humane Society of Brunswick have joined forces to provide opportunities for Veterans to adopt cats, dogs and other small animals. This new program is called Pets for Vets. “The idea came to me”, Jim Friedlander, DAV Chapter 15 Commander related, “when I saw how distraught one of our bachelor vets became upon the loss of his dog and sole companion; and how his whole demeanor changed for the better when a new pet came into his life. While most veterans tend to be outlived by their wives, the opposite occurred several times recently among my own circle of friends; I believe recent widowers would benefit from the introduction of a four-legged companion into their lives. “

Veterans can now adopt cats, dogs or other companion animals at a significantly reduced cost. In the case of senior pets, special needs animals or adult cats, all fees will be waived. Veterans are also encouraged to train and volunteer in the CHS Fostering Program. Foster caregivers provide for companion animals when the shelter is full or the animals are not ready for adoption. There is no cost to the veteran and Coastal Humane Society will provide food and medical care for free during the time the pet is fostered.

“Coastal Humane Society welcomes this opportunity to work with DAV as part of our ongoing community efforts to strengthen the bond between people and pets,” CHS Executive Director Karen Stimpson explained.

Adoption fees for ferrets, rabbits, cockatiels, guinea pigs, hamsters and parrots are also waived for eligible veterans.

The reduced adoption fee does include spay or neuter of the animal, heartworm and Lyme test, appropriate vaccinations, medical records and one year membership in the Coastal Humane Society. Canines are micro-chipped for identification.

To take advantage of this program, or if you have questions, call Bob Whitney, Pets for Vets Coordinator at Coastal Humane Society, 207-725-5051, ext. 12, or email: bobwhitney@coastalhumanesociety.org. If you have any veteran friends who might benefit from the program, please let them know. They should contact Jim Friedlander, DAV Chapter 15 Commander, 721-8979.

Coastal Humane Society is located just off outer Pleasant St. at 30 Range Rd. in Brunswick. You are welcome to personally visit the animals, or with Internet access, view them at www.coastalhumanesociety.org.
